| Sun, 26th July 12:30pm | Gorse Hill Nature Reserve & Clieves Hills 12:30 Start! 5mi (M) West Lancashire Group A lovely walk starting from the Gorse Hill Nature Reserve - please note earlier start time of 12:30 p.m. From the Reserve, we will walk across the fields into Aughton, before heading over to Clieves Hills, where we can have a short stop. Hopefully we will be able to enjoy the views over Liverpool Bay across Lancashire and Merseyside. From here we will cross farmland on good tracks, heading past preserved marl pits, before arriving back at our start point at the Nature Reserve. Their cabin cafe will be open for drinks and cakes (at very reasonable prices) for those wishing to round off an enjoyable afternoon. Parking: Park (free) at the Gorse Hill Nature Reserve off Holly Lane, Aughton, Ormskirk L39 7HB. See picture of entrance to the Reserve, which is single track. Please park towards the far end of the overflow car park to the left of the entrance. Holly Lane is easy to access from Gaw Hill Lane off the A59. Toilets available at the end of the walk. Aughton Park railway station is approx 1 mile from the start of the walk, and the 310 Liverpool to Ormskirk bus route approx 0.5 miles from the start. | Tue, 28th July 1:00pm | Grimeford Village and Little Scotland from the Blackrod Community Centre. 6mi (M) Chorley Group Starting from the Blackrod Community Centre we descend to cross the A6 crossing fields to the edge of the Rivington Services on the M61. Following field paths and track we reach Grimeford Lane near Grimeford Village then we join the Rotary Way for a very short distance before heading to Aberdeen Farm eventually passing through the area of Little Scotland to return to Blackrod. Then there is a delightful walk along the riverbank (care needed) past the railway viaduct and weir. Crossing over to the Leeds-Liverpool canal to return to Riley Green. | Sun, 2nd August 10:30am | Upper Wyre Way 11 or 8 miles Moderate walk (Figure of eight) 11mi (M) Hike On Lancashire Group A figure of eight, moderate walk from Abbeystead with fantastic views of a beautiful and quiet part of the Trough of Bowland. Leaving from Abbeystead we will head off on an initial 8 mile loop to take us past Abbeystead House and up into the Wyre catchment through Marshaw and Tarnbrook. Following the water to the start of the river takes us across fields and some lovely views. We then loop back down to Abbeystead and around the weir and through the woodland area by the river. Walkers may choose to leave at the 8 mile point and return back to their car or continue with the group for the full 11 miles. Depending on the weather there can be muddy and wet parts of this walk alongside uneven ground so please wear walking boots. Meet at Stoops Bridge car park, Abbeystead. After a short distance along Back Lane the route follows a right of way, Green Lane, to reach Red Bridge and crosses the River Douglas to reach Sollom village. From here we make our way towards the pretty village of Bracewell to enjoy our lunch stop. Having walked part-way round the reservoir, we pick up the Pennine Bridleway, then the Rochdale Way and finally the Rossendale Way, heading down to the spectacular, tree-lined, deep valley of Healey Dell. We pass through Healey Dell before heading back uphill to Cowm Reservoir. Crossing the A49 we follow the lanes and paths to Heskin Green then head towards Anderton Mills before turning the fields to Eccleston Delph. Eccleston Delph is an Open Swimming and Dive Centre where there is a cafe. I intend that we will stop here for a visit to this cafe. From there we will join The Witton Weavers Way for a spell and continue through Alum Scar Wood, and follow quiet roads towards Hoolster Hill. Onwards towards Salmesbury Hall before we turn off on a track towards Park Farm and then back to Mellor Brook. We will have several busy main roads to cross on this walk so extra care must be taken at these points. Southport airshow takes place 29th and 30th August and we will have the added spectacle of aircraft displays as well as the Sefton Coast scenery as we walk from Freshfield to Southport. Hopefully, we will see a red squirrel at the Formby nature reserve as well. We will follow the coastal path to Ainsdale and then walk into Southport along the beach. We start from Ferry Nab near Bowness and cross Windermere as a foot passenger on the car ferry. We climb to Far Sawrey via Claife Viewing Station and then passing Moss Eccles and Wise Een Tarns to the summit of Latterbarrow. We then descend to the lake shore and return to Ferry House where we catch the ferry back to Ferry Nab. Ferry fare is £1.50 each way and only accept card payments (no cash). Car parking available nearby. Dogs accepted if kept on a lead throughout the walk. There maybe grazing sheep nearby.
