| Tue, 18th August 1:00pm | Whittle Tunnels from the Buckshaw Sports Centre. 5.4mi (M) Chorley Group Starting from the Buckshaw Sports Centre car park we follow the paths through Cuerden Valley before climbing to the A6 in Whittle. We then continue to the old canal to pass through the Whittle Tunnels (torch recommended) before climbing to Town Lane. We then continue to cross the motorway and pass Lucas Green before reaching the Roebuck PH. We then return through the Lisieux Hall estate to the car park in Buckshaw. | Wed, 19th August 10:30am | Sunderland Point and Sambo's Grave 7 Miles 7mi (M) Preston Group The walk is 7 miles and is a figure of 8. Featuring the hill with no ascent, Basil Point, Sunderland, Sunderland Point and Sambo's Grave. There will be a lunch stop approximately half way round, please bring a packed lunch and something to drink. This is interesting coastal walk, good for bird watching. Sunderland and Overton were both ports serving Lancaster. Sunderland is interesting for several reasons and is tidal, cut off twice a day. We will be walking along the beach. This beach will be slippy in parts, and there are stones and large pebble to negotiate, therefore walking poles are useful. There are a number of step ladder styles and regular styles to cross. | Sat, 22nd August 10:30am | Mellor Brook and Allum Scar 7.5mi (M) Chorley Group We will be walking on tracks, field paths and through woodlands, making our way from Mellor Brook over farmland towards Stanley House and climbing up towards The Wainwright Monument near Witton Park. From there we will join The Witton Weavers Way for a spell and continue through Alum Scar Wood, and follow quiet roads towards Hoolster Hill. Onwards towards Salmesbury Hall before we turn off on a track towards Park Farm and then back to Mellor Brook. We will have several busy main roads to cross on this walk so extra care must be taken at these points. Turn right off roundabout on A59 signposted Mellor Brook and then immediate left and left again on next roundabout where there is parking on Whalley Road. | Sun, 23rd August 10:30am | Marles Wood, River Ribble and Hurst Green (9.5-mile moderate walk) 9.5mi (M) Hike On Lancashire Group Starting from Marles Wood Car Park, we walk through Marles Wood and along the River Ribble for about a mile. Crossing the Ribble via Dinkley Bridge, we walk up to Hurst Green, where there are public toilets and a coffee shop, for our first short break. Passing through the village, we then head out in the direction of Longridge Fell for a couple of miles before starting to head back towards the Ribble. On reaching the river again, we'll break for lunch: after lunch, we'll walk along or near the river until we reach Ribchester Bridge, where we'll carefully cross back over the Ribble before looping our way back to our cars and to an optional drink at a local hostelry. | Sun, 30th August 10:30am | Freshfield to Southport coastal walk 10mi (M) Hike On Lancashire Group In line with Ramblers initiative of having coastal walks in August we will host a coastal walk from Freshfield to Southport with some varied coastal scenery. Southport airshow takes place 29th and 30th August and we will have the added spectacle of aircraft displays as well as the Sefton Coast scenery as we walk from Freshfield to Southport. Hopefully, we will see a red squirrel at the Formby nature reserve as well. We will follow the coastal path to Ainsdale and then walk into Southport along the beach. | Thu, 3rd September 1:00pm | Scorton 5.6mi (M) South Ribble Group A walk in the Scorton area taking in parts of Wyresdale Park, Foxhouses and the Wyre Way. From the car park in Scorton (see below), we will follow the footpath south down into Scorton Village (40 mins), where we could well indulge in an early ice-cream, and toilets (40p, change only). A slight uphill walk will take us through Wyresdale Park and north up to Foxhouses, along quiet lanes, fields and tracks. Our return route takes us through Sunnyside (Caravan) Park & Fisheries, shortly after which we will pick up the Wyre Way en route back to the car park. Please note that the route is very overgrown in parts, with brambles, nettles and insects, so long trousers and sleeves are recommended. Poles may be useful. Parking at Scorton Picnic Site, north of Scorton Village (next to Bowland Lakes Leisure Village), Cleveley Bank Lane, Scorton, PR3 1BU. Carrying on we take the slab path to Great Hill before descending by the path on the south side to Dean Black Brook, passing Great Hill Farm. Crossing the Brook we head on to Round Loaf , where several paths converge. Th Ramblers who have recently attended the OS Map App training can practice their new found skills to ensure we pick up the path to Hurst Hill. Coming off the moor we head down a steep path to High Bullough Reservoir and Anglezarke Reservoir from the Manor House. | Sun, 6th September 10:30am | Claire Heights and Latterbarrow 10mi (M) Hike On Lancashire Group A 10 mile picturesque moderate circular walk exploring the area between the lakes of Windermere and Esthwaite Water. We start from Ferry Nab near Bowness and cross Windermere as a foot passenger on the car ferry. We climb to Far Sawrey via Claife Viewing Station and then passing Moss Eccles and Wise Een Tarns to the summit of Latterbarrow. We then descend to the lake shore and return to Ferry House where we catch the ferry back to Ferry Nab. Ferry fare is £1.50 each way and only accept card payments (no cash). Car parking available nearby. Dogs accepted if kept on a lead throughout the walk. There maybe grazing sheep nearby. | Sun, 20th September 10:30am | Mereclough to Hebden Bridge 10.5 miles moderate linear walk 10.5mi (M) Hike On Lancashire Group Mereclough to Hebden Bridge Linear Walk We'll walk through the fields towards the pretty hamlet of Hurstwood before reaching the reservoir of the same name. We'll then follow the Pennine Bridleway over the moors, crossing over the border to West Yorkshire, reaching the Gorple Stones before going past Upper Gorple and Lower Gorple reservoirs. After that we'll take the Pennine Way and further footpaths to the village of Heptonstall. We'll have a quick look round, maybe an ice cream before descending to Hebden Bridge. This is a linear walk and we'll catch the 591 bus back to the start. On Sundays the buses are every hour and leave Hebden at approx 25 minutes past the hour until 16.25. Then there's a break before the next bus at 18.10. There are 2 further buses at 10 past the hour. A single ticket costs £2.50. There are plenty of places for post-walk refreshments in Hebden. Please wear good shoes or boots. Whilst the tracks are good, they can be muddy on the open moorland. Meeting place: Kettledrum Inn, Red Lees Road, Burnley BB10 4RG. | Sat, 17th October 10:00am | The mines of Reeth and Reeth High Moor in Swaledale. 12.5 miles moderate. 12.5mi (M) Hike On Lancashire Group The first walk of our Reeth weekend away. Our Sunday walk will be for those on the weekend only to give us some choice in route. Swaledale contains lots of heritage mine sites which add a great interest to walks in this area. We will begin our walk along the Coast to Coast route towards Keld. This takes us past Old Gang Mills- smelt mills- and up towards Surrender Bridge. From there we will ascend Reeth High Moor along tracks and survey some more great industrial heritage of the area. We will drop down and use valley paths back into Reeth. There is height gain up onto the moor but quite a lot of sections are decent tracks. Boots still needed for the moor though!
